Root Canal Painting

 I haven't had time to paint this holiday season, I have had my Jana here and we have been  having so much fun together.  Yesterday, Jana went to dinner with her friend Judy and Harold went to  get a root canal so I had some time alone and decided to do a painting of a painting I saw at the Sego Lily Day Spa.  Julie, Jana and I  had a girls days and had massages there (our favorite SLC spa) and then lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and shopping at City Creek.  Every time I see this picture I will think of my girls and Harold's root canal.

Reinhold Messner

Reinhold Messner is the first man to climb Everest without the aid of oxygen or sherpas.  Tracey and Chris have a great   photo of themselves with Reinhold that was taken when he was in town for the Outdoor  Retailers Convention.

 I wanted to  paint this very abstract but yet recognizable. I did this while in my class tonight. My teacher loved it, another student said I ruined it with the wild color I did over Reinhold. I think it is kind of fun, and Harold likes it.

Rose and Snow

This is just a quick painting of a rose.

I  got this idea from a Robert Duncan painting.  I wish I painted as well as him.  This will be a Christmas gift for a dear friend. 

Rodeo Queen & Late night flowers

Harold had to make a trip up to the Boise Temple yesterday and  wasn't going to be home until late, so I decided to do a quick floral painting.  I didn't have a specific plan, and didn't sketch it.  I was happy with this little quickie.  I like the looseness ( is that a word?) and the colors. 

This was painted from an old newspaper photo from 1950.  My mother was a rodeo queen attendant.  She is the one on the left in the red and white shirt.  This painting was really way over my head and it caused me grief. I  spoke to several artist friends about their art and asked them if they ever re-paint a painting they are not happy  with.  They all said yes, and sometimes do it over several times. My personality will not allow that to happen, I don't have the patience to redo the same subject. So this is it.  Lots of flaws, but still a fun wacky painting I think my mom will get a kick out of. 

Sir Winston Churchill

My brother Steve took Harold and I on a bike ride in Midway Sat. and we did a little gallery stroll. At one of the galleries there were some cool loose paintings of Thomas Jefferson and some other famous people. I decided that I wanted to give it a try and paint Winston. Steve's middle name is Winston. This one is for you Steve. Thanks for being  such a cool brother and cheerleader.

My first large canvas 

Maurine gave me this large canvas  ( 36 " x 36") , and I painted my first large landscape. Super fun and fast. I worked about 3 hours on it last night and then did some finishing touches on it this morning, The colors work great in our dining room and go well  with the new rug Harold bought.

 

I did two paintings today

I am so excited to have this blog so I can store my paintings and write down my thoughts. These two paintings were done yesterday. The one of the funeral home is going to be a gift to my parents so I went to class on a mission to get it as perfect as possible, I was asking for help constantly and not trusting my instincts. I came away pretty discouraged. I got very little done in class and was determined not to touch it until next week and have my teacher spoon feed again on every little detail. I have NO patience, I came home and within an hour had my painting done, I have a problem focusing on anything else until I am finished with a painting.  At first I hated it and was ticked with my lack of patience, but now I look at it and like it with all the imperfections.  

After finishing the funeral home and being extremely frustrated, I decided to do a loose painting and throw all the rules out the window and go for it.  I saw this picture on FB, Mel had posted it and I thought it would make a great painting, I spent a couple of hours on it and I love it.  Maybe someday I will be more exact and technical ( or maybe not) I enjoy just jumping in and painting these rough loose pieces.

I did this painting at home of the Park City barn,  I loved it, I took it to show my teacher and he said the perspective  was terrible and to  fix it, I didn't, I like it. So there.   If you look really close on the left side of the picture you will see me and my girlfriend Ardath running.  This is one of our favorite running routes.
